NPX BioBalls - PHBV (fast degradation)
NPX BioBalls - PHBV (fast degradation)
The NPX Bioballs are a biological filter material for removal of nitrates.
The NPX bioballs are made of PHA which means that they work on a purely biological basis through bacterial nitrate breakdown. Nitrates and phoshates are the main nutrients for algae. Bacteria can break down this nitrate under specific conditions. One of these conditions is that the bacteria need a carbon food source (a nutrient for bacteria). That is where the NPX bioballs come into play.
How do the NPX bioballs work?
In about four weeks, bacteria colonize on its surface, forming a dense biofilm. Beneath this film, a low-oxygen zone develops, prompting bacteria to switch to "nitrate respiration," degrading algae-fueling nitrate (NO3). The bio balls serves as a food source for the bacteria, while the nitrate serves as a source of oxygen. Consequently, the bio balls diminish over time (visually), vanishing entirely in 6-12 months, depending on nitrate levels. That is the moment you will need to replace the bioballs.
The bioballs are packed in boxes with 75 pieces.
